Communication, Cultural and Media Studies Research Centre

Welcome to the Communication, Cultural & Media Studies (CCM) Research Centre at the University of Salford, UK.  CCM is one of the largest research centres dedicated to media work in the UK (8th largest in RAE2008), and is ranked 13th in the UK for its research (research power rankings, RAE2008). 90% of CCM research is of international standard, of which 15% is evaluated as ‘world-leading’. We are also the leading media research group in the northwest of England.

Media activity thrives at Salford, in terms of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, our industry links, as well as our research, and we have ambitious future plans.  We are extremely well placed over the next few years to make a central contribution to the development of Media City at Salford Quays, and we welcome the opportunities that will be generated by the BBC's significant move north to Salford.  We fundamentally endorse BBC Director General Mark Thompson's observation in 2007 that 'Salford makes sense for the BBC'.

CCM aims to raise the profile of existing research and facilitate new projects between media studies, cultural studies and the sociology of culture. The centre moves across the School and Research Institute boundaries of the university generating a dynamic multi-disciplinary research culture. Its academic members and postgraduate students produce high quality research, and actively engage and collaborate with regional communities, national media industries and international research networks.

The work of CCM is characterised by an engagement with the social operations of culture and media.  We have organised ourselves in a small number of collaborative research groups

We have collaborative links with other groups interested in the creative and cultural industries across the university, including in particular:

If you would like to find out more, perhaps because you want to work with CCM on a project or study as a research student, please look through the information on these pages, or get in touch. We look forward to hearing from you.
